6.5 Creedmoor Ammo
6.5 Creedmoor Overview
6.5 Creedmoor ammunition represents a modern, purpose-built cartridge designed for exceptional long-range performance. Introduced in 2007 by Hornady, this cartridge has rapidly become one of the most popular choices for precision shooters and hunters alike. Based on the .30 TC case necked down to accept 6.5mm (.264") bullets, the 6.5 Creedmoor features an efficient case design with minimal body taper and a 30-degree shoulder angle. The 6.5mm bore diameter allows for high ballistic coefficient bullets in the 120-147 grain range that deliver a superior balance of trajectory, wind resistance, and terminal effectiveness while generating mild recoil. The cartridge's design permits bullets to be seated at optimal depth while maintaining overall length compatibility with short-action rifles, enhancing both accuracy and efficiency.
6.5 Creedmoor Specifications & Performance
Specification | Performance Data |
---|---|
Velocity | 2,650-2,750 fps (143-147 grain bullets) 2,700-2,850 fps (130-140 grain bullets) 2,900-3,000 fps (120-123 grain bullets) Measured at muzzle with 24-inch barrel |
Trajectory | Exceptionally flat trajectory with typical drop of 34-38 inches at 500 yards Zeroed at 200 yards, bullets impact only 5-6 inches low at 300 yards Maintains supersonic flight beyond 1,200 yards with high BC bullets |
Energy | 2,300-2,500 ft-lbs at the muzzle (140-grain bullets) 1,600-1,800 ft-lbs at 300 yards 1,200+ ft-lbs at 500 yards, sufficient for ethical deer harvests |
Recoil | Mild (12-15 ft-lbs in typical hunting rifles) Approximately 40% less than comparable .30 caliber magnums Exceptionally manageable for extended shooting sessions and field practice |
Accuracy | Sub-MOA accuracy is standard with quality rifles Match-grade loads typically produce 0.5 MOA groups or better at 100 yards Inherently accurate across different rifle platforms and barrel configurations |
Wind Drift | Approximately 15-17 inches at 500 yards with 10 mph crosswind (140-grain high BC bullet) Superior wind resistance compared to most hunting calibers Consistently outperforms .308 Winchester and other standard hunting cartridges |
Bullet Selection | Available with premium bullets from 120-147 grains Typically features high BC bullets (.5-.65 G1) with match-grade accuracy Wide selection of bullet designs from target-oriented to controlled expansion hunting bullets |
Effective Range | Ethical hunting range of 400-600 yards for experienced shooters Maintains velocity above 1,800 fps (threshold for reliable expansion) to 400+ yards Competitive target shooting capability beyond 1,000 yards |
